This was Brown's reaction when asked why:

ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported that Larry Brown resigned because he wanted a long-term deal, but SMU wasn't willing to offer it.

SMU and Larry Brown dealt with a scandal in September of 2015. The NCAA banned SMU’s men’s team from 2016 postseason play and suspended Brown for 30 percent of the team’s games all because of a “lack of head coach control," according CBS

SMU already has its new head coach.

Larry Brown spent four years at SMU and has coached with multiple NBA teams including the Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks and Charlotte Bobcats (now Charlotte Hornets). Brown also coached for the University of Kansas in the mid 1980's.
